Mission
The mission of the County Treasurer’s Office is the provision of timely, efficient and professional service to our constituents.
Duties & Responsibilities
The County Treasurer mails out the property tax bills and receives payment for not only the property taxes but also for all other miscellaneous county receipts.
The Treasurer is in charge of the safekeeping and investment of all county funds. The American Heritage Dictionary defines Treasurer as "One in charge of the funds or revenues of a government, corporation, club, etc." The County of Valencia is certainly not a club or corporation, but a thriving growing county. Valencia County is listed among the fastest growing counties in the state.
The Treasurer currently mails over 209,000 property tax bills every year. The funds collected by the Treasurer is disbursed to the State of New Mexico, Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District, University of New Mexico-Valencia Campus, Village of Los Lunas, Village of Bosque Farms, City of Belen, Los Lunas School District and the Belen School District. Of the $24 million plus dollars collected, the County of Valencia keeps less than 30% of it.
The Treasurer’s Office also collects all fees imposed by the county. The County Treasurer does not determine the assessed valuation, the tax rate, or the amount of the taxes due. The Treasurer and the finance office must work together because the county’s budget is dependent upon the amount of monies collected by the Treasurer.
Delinquent Taxes
If a property is delinquent for 3 years, it is placed on a Delinquency List that is sent to the State of New Mexico, Property Tax Division, in July of each year.
Therefore, County Treasurers are instructed to collect a state cost fee of $125 per delinquent account. This is a requirement from the State of New Mexico Property Tax Division. If you have any questions, please contact them at 505-827-0883.
Policies & Procedures
The policies and procedures set forth by the Treasurer address:
- Continued prompt and accurate processing of property tax payments, especially in pursuing the aggressive collection of delinquent property tax payments.
- Ensure the Treasurer and staff are accessible, courteous, efficient and professional in providing service to the public.
- Refinement of rapid and safe investment of property tax dollars, maximizing the rate of return on county investments.
